Matter, forces and energy

Grade-school science exam questions on states of matter, atoms and elements, chemical change, forces and motion, heat, light, sound, electricity and magnetism, taken from the ARC question set. A few items reach into Earth science — the water cycle, the rotation of the Earth, the core and the geomagnetic field — where the question is still about matter, waves or energy.

  • Anverso Which change in the state of water particles causes the particles to become arranged in a fixed position?
    Reverso Freezing
  • Anverso In a gasoline-powered car, chemical energy from gasoline is transformed to make the car move. The motion of the car is what form of energy?
    Reverso Mechanical energy
  • Anverso A student wraps a wire around an iron nail. The student then connects the wire to a battery. The nail attracts another nail and they stick together. What force holds the two nails together?
    Reverso Magnetic force
  • Anverso Gold atoms can be identified based on the number of which subatomic particles?
    Reverso Protons
  • Anverso One key physical process in beach formation is wave action. Sand is deposited on beaches as waves break onto the shoreline and the energy from the wave scatters. Which type of energy is most used by wave action to modify the shape of the beaches?
    Reverso Mechanical

Este mazo se modificó al incorporarlo: A subset of the questions was selected and each multiple-choice item was turned into a card: only the text of the correct answer is kept, the distractors and the option letters are removed. Questions that point at material the card does not carry, that are negative, or whose answer does not stand on its own were dropped. Whitespace is normalised and flattened chemical formulas are given their subscripts back (H2O → H₂O); no word is rewritten. A review then read the deck card by card and removed, without rewriting anything: cards whose answer was factually wrong in the source; cards whose answer only made sense against the multiple-choice grid that is no longer shown; and the many cards that restated a fact another card already carried — one card was kept per fact. Selection is by subject matter and is not airtight: the deck is centred on physics and chemistry but keeps a handful of Earth science questions, and the source does not let us certify that every item comes from the Easy split rather than the Challenge one.
