Dieser Stapel wurde bei der Aufnahme verändert: No name has been rewritten. The changes are selection and splitting: the cities are those of Natural Earth’s 10 m populated places, the national capitals left out because the catalogue already covers them, the rest ranked by the dataset’s own population estimate and cut off at a workable deck length — so this is a selection of large cities, not a strict ranking of the largest, and some mid-sized ones sit alongside the very large. Entries whose name is missing, damaged or ambiguous in this language have been dropped rather than repaired, and a city name that appears twice takes both of its cards down with it. The deduplication covers the whole series and not just this deck: “Birmingham” is in England and in Alabama, so neither card is kept. Entries whose country carries a contested name in this language, and those in states that are not generally recognised, have been dropped as well — a review card is not the place to settle that. A later pass removed what the first one had let through, and removal was the only remedy used: an entry that cannot be defended is dropped, never re-answered, because we cannot correct the source without being able to prove the correction. It took out Sevastopol and Simferopol, which the deck answered “Russia” although Crimea is internationally recognised as Ukrainian; and the Russian cities lying east of the conventional Europe–Asia line — Siberia, the Far East, the eastern slope of the Urals — together with the cities that straddle that line (Magnitogorsk, Orenburg) and the North Caucasus ones whose side of it depends on which convention is followed (Makhachkala, Vladikavkaz). Reverse cards stay off: a few fronts are unambiguous only in the city → country direction, “Frankfurt” among them.
